Frequently Asked Questions . . .
Do I have to be associated with a Scouting organization to use your service?
No, not at all. Although they are our primary market, many small businesses and other organizations or individuals utilize our service.
Can I register a domain name and forward it to my free web site I have with my ISP?
Absolutely! Many of our customers use our free forwarding service to forward visitors to their site with a long URL offered by their ISP. Once you register your name, go into our Domain Management area. Change the nameservers to "Forwarding Nameservers" which will open up an area within the control panel where you can set URL forwarders or other records.
Can I forward email send to my domain to another email address?
Yes! You must be using our "Forwarding Nameservers" which will open up an area of the control panel where you can set up to 100 different forwarding email addresses. Understand, these are only forwarding email addresses. We do not offer actual POP/SMTP mailboxes as part of this service.
I've never worked with DNS records before . . . Can you help?
Sure, although it's truly not that difficult. Within your control panel there is a link to our detailed instructions for setting your A, URL or MX records. However, if you still need help, just contact us with instructions on what you are trying to do and we'd be happy to set it up for you.
Can I forward any mail received at any "address" at my domain to another email address?
Yes, you can set this up a couple ways. We suggest setting up the known email addresses that people will use to the current forwarding email accounts you would like. You can setup a "catchall" email forwarder by using the character "*" and forward mails sent to any address not listed to another email account of your choice. This allows you to "catch" mistyped email addresses and the like.
What type of DNS records are available through your service?
You have several choices of records to use:
- A (Address) - Using this type of record allows you to associate a host with an IP address.
- MX (Mail) - Can be either a host name under your domain name (for example, "mail3") or the name of a mail server.
- MXE (Mail Easy) - Using a mail record allows you to specify the address of your mail server. When you use a mail record, you
must use an IP address in the address field.
- CNAME (Alias) - An alias record type is used to associate a host name with another host. The host that you wish to point to does not have to be on your network.
- URL Redirect - URL Redirect is the standard method for URL Forwarding.
- URL Frame URL Frame is similar to URL Redirect except that instead of redirecting the client to your web page, the web page is displayed in a frame from our web server. The address bar on the browser will always display your domain URL.
Do I have to use your DNS service and the "Forwarding Nameservers"?
No, not at all. You can utilize your own custom nameservers given to you by your web hosting provider. Ensure they input correctly. New domains are set by default to point to Scout Web Service's servers for hosting there.
How many nameservers should I input?
You must put in at least 2 custom nameservers. These are provided by your hosting provider. Only put in the nameservers they give you. Do not "assume" that if ns1.hosting.com and ns2.hosting.com are good then you should also finish out the block with ns3 and ns4. This can actually cause issues unless your provider has instructed you to add those.
What is a domain transfer?
Domain names are registered through a domain registrar. There are many domain name registrars out there including us. When you transfer a domain you are changing who you are using to manage your domain name. You can transfer a domain name from any registrar to our service. Each domain transfer includes a 1 year extension to the expiration date of your domain.
Prior to transferring a domain to our service, ensure you have the Registrar Lock off at your current registrar. If transferring a .org, .us, .info or .biz domain name, you must supply us with your "EPP Transfer Authorization Code". This can be obtained from your current registrar.
I changed my custom nameservers and now I can't see my domain, what's going on?
Whenever you change your nameservers or DNS records, it will take up to 48 hours for those changes to propagate throughout the various servers of the "Net".
Can everyone see that I own this domain and my information?
Yes! Domain registration information becomes part of the national Whois database and is a public record. Whois information however, must by law, be true and accurate. If you want to protect your information, we offer an ID Protect service for an additional $8.00/year that will prevent others from seeing that information.
What information should I put in the various contact fields?
As owner of the domain, that is totally up to you. You may want to put us or your hosting provider as Technical Contact, but there is really no need. By default, we put your information down in all the fields. If you want to change that, you can do that from within the Domain Management area.
I want to register a domain with a TLD different than what you offer. Do I need to do that elsewhere?
No, not necessarily. We have just listed some of the most popular TLD's. Contact us and we'll give you a quote for that TLD registration.
Do you have a Terms of Service?
Yes, Click Here for the "fine print".
